147 | Restore Collective Core Value: Servant Leadership
===
[00:00:00] Hey friends. Welcome back to the Called to Lead podcast. So today is another episode where we are going to be rolling out a core value for our brand new direct sales company, Restore Collective, and it's hard to believe, but we only have four more values left. And so this week I was actually torn about what to talk about.
So I threw it over to my focus group, which is essentially those of you guys who have plugged in to the focus group survey that is linked in the description of all of my recent podcast or on YouTube. And it's basically where we're gathering feedback and information and giving sneak peaks for all of the scoop behind the product development at the foundational elements, the systems like pretty much all of it.
We're getting your feedback and we're so grateful. And this week's podcast episode was specifically chosen. ~Uh,~ by a majority of the people who voted on the polls within our founding partner, mentors, focus groups. And basically what it is is they have telegram threads [00:01:00] where we can do a poll, they can share the poll in there, and then you can give live and direct feedback that is genuinely helping me in the decisions of creating this company, which is exciting.
But today's core value. Servant leadership was chosen by you for this week's podcast. And I cannot wait to share the reasons why we chose this. A little bit more of the story behind it and to dive a little bit deeper into this. So let's dive into this week's episode, all about servant leadership.
[00:02:00]
Okay. So we're going to kick things off as we always do with the verse in the Bible, that really was the inspiration behind why we chose this verse and subsequently the reasons why we chose it. The three reasons that I'm going to share today are all based on this are really these verses. There's a few. And it's in Matthew chapter 20, starting in verse 26, which says it shall not be so among you, but whoever would be great among you must be your servant. And whoever would be first among you must be your slave. ~Even as the son of main man came not to cert. ~Even as the son of [00:03:00] man came, not to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
So this is a beautiful verse and there's a lot wrapped up to it. And it's basically, ~uh,~ following up on the heels of a conversation of like a mama trying to. ~Uh, ~come to Jesus and basically just saying like, Hey, can you, can you please. ~Uh,~ you know, make sure that my sons are well taken care of. And one is that your right hand and what is it, your left in your kingdom? And he basically was like, all right. , you don't really understand how this works and with compassion, he explained that essentially, ~uh, ~that's number one, not up to him, it's up to his father, God, but then he basically just said that essentially people here on earth are used to like, if you're first or if you're not first you're last.
What is that like from Ricky, Bobby? What's that movie? It's such a good one, but essentially if you're not first you're last, well, Jesus likes so much of what he does. ~Um,~ in the Bible. He I just completely flipped up what this world says upside [00:04:00] down. To just dive into the fact that whoever would be great among you must be your servant. And of course back then in Jewish society and thankfully a little bit less.
So now, ~um, we, you know,~ we don't have like the cast systems or like the class systems. But ultimately it's not common that you'll hear someone say they want to be a servant or they want to be a slave. But that my friends is what Jesus says here in the scripture is what we have to do in order for us to be great. And I don't know about you, but in business.
And especially as believers, we're called to do our best and to do things as if we're doing it. ~Uh,~ unto the Lord, right. Whatever that job looks like for you, whether it's network marketing or just being a mama. Or whatever it is that we're called to, we're called to be great. And so what Jesus is saying right here is in order to do that, we have to be a servant and whoever would be first among you must be your slave. And so I wanted to unpack this a little bit more [00:05:00] along with the three reasons we chose it.
And the first reason right off the gate is because Christ exemplified this. So even on His last days, when He had the last supper with His disciples, what did He do? He washed their feet, which again, we don't really like wash our feet before dinner. That's not something, thankfully we have like showers in our house and we can be clean anytime we want to.
But back then, in those times, if you were going over to someone's house for dinner, They would, if they were wealthy, they would have a servant that would wash your feet for you. ~Uh,~ or maybe a slave, something along along those lines. But instead Jesus was the one that washed the feet of all of his servants, including Judas, the one who was going to betray him.
And he knew this and turn him over and that beautiful example of essentially becoming the lowest in the room. Is such a like brilliant visual for how we should live our lives and how, especially if you have a heart to become a leader or to [00:06:00] become great. That picture is exactly what he's talking about right here, that the son of man came not to be served, but to serve. And then of course, to give his life as a ransom for many, which is exactly what he did. ~Uh, ~by basically taking away all of our shortcomings when he died on the cross and in our place.
And so. My friends, this is a beautiful picture of what it looks like and because Christ exemplified it. And because he is the example of what it looks like to truly serve and to love those around you, even when they're hard to love. Even when, for example, just to take it into an example in your business, like, even if you've got someone on your team that is a little difficult or someone, maybe that's a sideline sister to you. Or just a difficult situation.
It can be really difficult to, to serve people. ~Uh,~ when you might be exhausted feeling like you're serving your family, your husband. All of the things and there might not be enough of you to go around. But I think when it's done from the [00:07:00] right motivation, And if you are working towards the things that the Lord has called you to, he will give you that strength to do it.
And as we'll talk about in a minute, it could actually bring a lot of joy and fulfillment into your business when you do so. So the first reason that we chose servant leadership is because all throughout scripture, Jesus exemplifies what this looks like over and over and over again. And that's what we hope to do here is look to him as our example and the examples of all of the hard things he went through. ~Uh,~ on his journey while he was here on earth are all outlined in scripture. And time and time again, that example of him being that servant leadership, meaning he had a lot of followers.
He had a lot of people that were. You know, following alongside him, like quite literally. And there are many of us still to this day, but the way that he did that was to serve us. And honestly, that's still what he's doing. If you look around at the blessings in your life, All good things are from him [00:08:00] and for him and through him.
And so when you see the things, whether it's the people, the experiences, ~the,~ the business, ~the, ~your children, your spouse, like when you see those things that enrich your life in some way, that's God,~ Jesus, and God serving you. And ~being the example of that servant leadership. And so, because he does that, that's what we aspire to do in all facets of our life.
But especially when it comes to business. And so that leads me to the number two reason that we chose. This is it's honestly just more effective. So I'm a bit of a business strategist, and I love to kind of drill down in any business model to really kind of find out what works. And I'm here to tell you that if you try to build a business that is based on what's in it for you, meaning what, how you're going to make money, how you are going to hit your next rank, how you're going to grow your team.
If you make this business and you make the focus about what you're going to get from it, my friends, I can tell you, you're not going to be very [00:09:00] successful. And that's what our world teaches us. And that's what the world kind of exemplifies. But again, that's not what Christ exemplify. and I can tell you from personal experience in having been in the top levels of leadership and having tried to do it all on my own and tried to do it by forcing my way to the top. Or dragging people along with me. It didn't work.
And so actually want to share a little story. And if you're watching this on YouTube, you can see these little mini ears. And I've shared this in a, I had a course, a leadership course at some point that we will be bringing into Restore, which I'm excited about. ~Um,~ but these little mini ears represent. One of the most challenging, but looking back one of the most beautiful seasons in my business, and that was when I was going for what essentially was the top of our old company.
It was a really high level leadership. It was kind of that first like six figure mark and no one had done it in about a year or more. And I knew I was really, really, really close. And I was like, you know what, I'm going to do whatever it takes to make it [00:10:00] happen. I'm a goal getter. Let's do this. Well, unfortunately, instead of empowering those on my team and really kind of focusing on how, not just the leaders, that would be ranking also to some high levels on my team. But really looking at some of maybe the new people that had joined or the people who were just getting started. Instead of really me putting my focus on what they wanted out of the business.
I put my full focus and energy on what I wanted in that month, which was to rank. And I did several things that, you know, really weren't out of compliance, but they weren't in the best interest of that person. So. I came up with these giveaways, essentially for them to be able to generate some business.
I love to use the analogy that a lot of times people will try to funnel orders, ~um, ~which I know that that's a very, very common thing that happens where you maybe take a customer of yours. Maybe it's like your mom or your sister or someone, and you'll have them order from someone on your team [00:11:00] in order to reach a volume rank or, you know, to help you get some structure in place. And while sometimes that's not compliant or that sometimes that is compliant.
And while it certainly can be justified. ~Uh,~ you know, on a business worldly way. I'm here to tell you, it's not a great idea and it's not what serving your person best to do that. And here's an example of why. So imagine you've many of you guys have kids and you're teaching them how to play soccer. And they're just kind of getting the gist of it and they're getting out there on the field, which is the hardest part.
Right. And they're there. They're kind of learning how to, how to dribble is it even dribble in soccer? I don't know much about soccer, but they're passing. You know, they're kind of kicking, they're figuring it out and they go to make a shot on the goal and they miss. And so it's like, okay, you got this, like, let's get, get back out there and do it.
So they get back out on the field, they go, they go and they miss, and this keeps happening over and over again. Maybe they get one in here and there, but really they're not doing the best job because they just got started and they're [00:12:00] just building their confidence in it. So. What's the worst possible thing that you could do in that scenario?
It would be to run out on the field and kick the ball in the net on their behalf, and then turn around and say, yay. You did it, you made a goal. Well, guess what? Like they're going to turn around and look at you and be like, Nope, no, I didn't, I didn't do anything. You did that for me. And now I feel like I can't do it myself. And my confidence has completely shaken.
I feel a little sort of manipulated cause like, what was this about? Was this about scoring the point or winning the game or was this about helping me find joy in something that can be fulfilling for me? And so just like my friends, we wouldn't want to run on the field and kick the ball in the net for our kids. We don't want to do that for those that are on our team, even if it seems like we're serving them by giving them an order or by placing a structure or something, somewhere on there. But what I can tell you, and this is exactly what happened to [00:13:00] me because I essentially. ~Um, ~and again, this month, I can't even remember what the specifics and it really was two months in a row that I kind of did this.
And I did. I was able to hit that high rank. ~Um,~ the next month I didn't maintain it the next month. I kind of forced my way back there by trying to do some of the servant leadership. That's not what I'm talking about here. I'm kind of kicking the ball in the net for people so that they could win. And then in turn I won. But guess what happened just two months later? My upline announced that she was doing a trip to Disney.
If someone got paid at the rank that I was. Before I ranked. So the rank that I had been at for about two years solid in my business, I mean, I was very solidly at that rank. So, of course you're like, oh, I got this, no problem. And she said, I'm going to be sending out these these Mini ears to anyone who gets it.
And of course, doing recognition on her Facebook page. Well, That month rolls around. Guess what? I went two steps backwards in my business. And not only did I [00:14:00] not get paid at this rank that month not get the Mini ears not get announced as having earned and achieved it. But my team, instead of having forward momentum, they went two steps backwards because I had dragged them and pushed them. Towards my goals, not their own goals. And you guys that same month, I actually wound up going to a Bob Hielig conference with two of my direct legs. That, ~um,~ we're not actually, they didn't even have teammates at that point and they were getting active in their business here and there and kind of had varying interest levels. But I have been spending so much time trying to help the people that didn't want this, but yet right in front of me, I had two amazing women who had trusted me as their mentor fly across the country to attend a leadership conference with me that looked at me and said, Heather, we need you. We know, we don't make up your structure that you need, but like, we, we love this and I feel like we can do this and we need your help.
And it was such a game changer for me. And it's [00:15:00] pretty wild because Colleen Matthews that you've probably heard me talk about on this podcast and is one of our founding partner mentors with Restore Collective was one of those two people. And in that moment, that shift in my mindset to say, okay, here's Colleen telling me that she wants this.
And even if it's going to take years for her to get to the level where it's going to count for this, this rank. Not only did she, gosh, within a year get to like the top two or 1% of the company, but she then got to that same level that I ranked. She got her there herself within a few years. And so, and then it wasn't just Colleen others along the way in the journey.
When I started focusing, not on who I needed to have success in my business, but who I could serve to reach their goals. And exemplifying those same, same ideas and not trying to kick the ball in the net for their people either. Right. And teaching and sharing that example along the way that my friends is what allowed me to grow such a [00:16:00] beautiful business that was based in a structure that was incredibly solid and effective, not based on what I needed, but based on what others wanted and how I could help them win.
And so my friends, that's the number two reason that we chose this servant leadership is because it works. It's a strategy that is effective and just like any good business. Book or any personal development that's out there. It's all found in the example of Christ and in the words of scripture, And servant leadership is a perfect example of that.
And so that is a reason that we want this to be a value that you. Are aligned with is because it's effective and it's going to allow you to be great in your business when you can shift. Your focus ~on what ~off of what you need and onto how you can help serve others in their business. And then the last and third and final reason is kind of tied to this is that it's just so much more fulfilling. So it might be more effective, but the best part about this is it's more fun and it's more [00:17:00] fulfilling to help other people win in their business.
And I know this from experience because I never found so much joy in my business. And still to this day, like even founding this company, everything I do is to try to equip you. If you're a partner or an advocate, or, you know, even if you're just a customer or even if you're a distributor at a completely different company, trying to build your business, it's my goal.
To be able to equip you with everything you need. In order to have a business as successful as you want it to be. And everybody's going to be different in that. And only maybe five to 10% of people are even going to aspire to probably the level of leadership that you do, that if you're listening to these podcasts and you are excited and driven, And maybe you want to do big things with Restore or what other, you know, any other company that's out there.
I'm here to tell you that what you're really searching for. It's not the rank. It's not the income you're searching for something that's going to be fulfilling and that's going to fill your cup. And the best way to do that is by serving others. [00:18:00] And I actually just read a secular article that talked about that this week, it talked about generosity and serving and doing even just little small acts of kindness for others. That has been scientifically proven to improve your brain function, improve your mood, which then ties back into the health of your body. And so it doesn't have to be this big, huge thing to focus on how you can serve someone.
And honestly, it, my favorite way to do it, it's just each and every day to say a little prayer, Lord, give me one person that I can serve today, or one person that I can show your love to today. And that's a prayer that he's pretty much always going to answer. And even if it's just one person a day that you can serve and maybe it's your kids by having the self-control to put down the phone. And shut it down for the night, or maybe it's your husband that you can serve by, you know, Filling him in on where your heart is in this business or whatever business that you're in.
And you can serve him [00:19:00] by being transparent with him and having maybe what can even be a hard conversation with him. Maybe it's serving someone on your team that hasn't heard from you in a while that maybe has been quietly doing the things, but hasn't really been the type to ask for help or accountability. Connect with them, just genuinely check in and just see how they're doing and how it's going, because you never know that could be the catalyst to let them lean into your example.
That could be the difference maker for how they can show up and serve their team. And again, have the success that's most effective in their business. And have the fulfillment that comes from that as well. And so friends when you choose to put others over your needs and when you choose to focus on the needs of your customers, On the needs and hopes and desires and dreams of your team, and you find ways to help lean into serving them. You will win, not just in terms of the growth of your business or the growth of your bank account. [00:20:00] But in terms of the growth of who you are as a person who you are as a leader, and most importantly in the fulfillment that can only come from following in Christ example. And so my friends, those are the three reasons we chose servant leadership.
Number one, Christ gave us that example personally, in the Bible over and over and over again. And the beautiful words for why. And number two, it's the most effective way to build any business. And number three, it's the most fulfilling aspect of business when it's done. Right. And it's what is going to create something so beautiful.
If you align with us in this core value of Restore Collective. So I'm going to wrap up in a prayer for all of you guys. And I am so thankful for y'all listening. Dear Lord, thank you so much for those that aspire to do greatness in their life and in their business. And we're all just over here, trying to kind of figure out the best way to do that. And the greatest news is you give us exactly how to do that.
Both in your example, that was carefully [00:21:00] documented in scripture. But also in your words, like, just like the verse that we talked about in Matthew today, and Lord, you give us that example for how to do this the right way. And so just help us to look to you and not to the world or not to the bad examples of some bad leadership that we maybe have seen from others in the past, or maybe we've even slipped into the habit of ourselves. And that's usually rooted in fear or scarcity or control and not in the abundance and the freedom that can only come from handing things over to you.
And so Lord, just those listening, wherever they are in their business, whether it's with Restore with another company, just getting started in their business, trying to maintain. A level of leadership in their business, whatever that looks like, help them realize that the way that they are going to be great is to serve others.
And the way that they're going to find fulfillment and joy in their business is to shift the focus off of what they need and what they want and onto how they can help others get what they [00:22:00] want. And Lord, I'm so thankful for the blessing of how that has shown up in my life and just help keep Roger and I grounded as we found this company on these principles.
And thank you again for the platform and opportunity to share it in Jesus name. Amen. Well, thank you guys for listening to this episode and get excited for more to come. And don't forget to get plugged into the focus groups, by filling out the survey in the chat. And then you'll get an email update where with how you can connect with one of our founding partner mentors to get plugged into their chats, where you can take a part of the polls and the feedback and the product development and exciting updates and all of the things.
So thank you guys for listening. I hope you have a beautiful week. Bye. [00:23:00]
